View Full Version : Fixing plastic?

I've got a pannier that's pretty badly damaged and I haven't been able to find a replacement for a reasonable cost. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to fix it in such a way that it will look OK. It doesn't have to be perfect or anything, just functional and better looking than the duck tape job that I'll otherwise be stuck with.:frown:
Does anybody around here repair stuff like this?

Mats,
Some body shops do repair plastics using a 'plastic welder'. You'll need to find out what type of plastic is used in that side case. The cases on my Concours are a modified PVC / ABS composite, the plastic on the body is ABS. Using the wrong 'welding rod' will result in a failure of the repair.
Universal Plastics sells the welder and supplies. It's not hard to goo the plastic together, getting it smooth and to the point where it can be sanded and painted is a different story.
I'd probably spend my time and energy on a consistent EBay search along with scouring the Ducati forums.
Cheers!

you can use the marine fiberglass fill stuff to do it. tape it fixed from the inside and let gravity pull the stuff into the crack and bond. sanding it flat afterwards will finish it off. the marine stuff is better than the plastic stuff and much more durable. it comes in two part mix kind and also as single use. you can do it!

Thanks guys. I've been searching high and low for one, but I'll give it another couple of weeks and then I'll try the home spun repair. It's not like I can make it any worse. :D

lcc has a plastic welding course, you might be able to have a student fix it for a grade and a case of brew.
but you would have to wate till fall class's
the fiberglass thing sounds pretty good too.

Mats,
If you would like help, I could Fiberglass it for you from the inside. It is a sound repair and does not cost much or take long at all. PM me and I will get the pannier from you and have it back in a couple of days or so.

Repaired from the inside with marine fiberglass. This adds a measure of strength
from the matrix of the fiberglass. Also makes it waterproof again.

Mats, I've been looking at your avatar. Is that a pic of your bike inside the house?

Mats, I've been looking at your avatar. Is that a pic of your bike inside the house?I wish I had that kind of room in the house. It's actually the pic the previous owner posted on Craigs list. He has a small shop in his basement. I've been too lazy to take new pics of the bikes.

The wall behind the bike looks alot like my living room wall, and I couldn't tell if the board under the centerstand was on carpet.

I would love it if I got home and someone had left a Ducati in my living room. If only I was that lucky. LOL:lol:
