Anybody have any experience with rider to rider communication headsets such as Chatterbox? We're thinking about getting some, but are skeptical. Are they hard to install, do I have to drill the helmet? Do they even work? Are they uncomfortable? Thanks for any input. Vin and El

Nothing against the chatterbox but after I found the Motocomm ST-1 everything else just seems to suck.

Music, phone, intercom and if you plug an FRS radio into it it's a chattterbox....

Thanks, So have you actually used this unit with a FRS two way radio? Whats the range? is it voice activated? Where do you put the radio? Just like in your jacket? That seems like a much cheaper way of doing it, could you also use cell phone? Thanks for helping me, Ellie and I ride all the time and would like to talk to each other, but $600 for chatterbox seems like a rip. Thanks Vin
I rode with a guy who has one and talked extensively to him about it so that and what the website has to say is what I'm basing it off of.
Yes, you can use your cellphone with it.
From expereience FRS radios are not lo0ng range, maybe 2 miles in perfect conditions. Figure 1 mile if you want to understand the person while riding. the kit comes with a PTT (push to talk) switch that straps to your handlebars. I would probably wire it to the horn button. Chatterbox's work on FRS frequencies so they are chatterbox compatible without having that nasty box hanging on your helmet.
The rider/passenger intercom is voice activated.
If your using an MP3 player it will automatically mute the music when your communicating with someone else. It will also amplify the sound from your MP3 player
It also has a port that can be used for an audio input from something like a GPS or radar detector.
The box itself isn't that big. You could put it in a tankbag, under the seat, a large pocket or bury it in your farings. Many options for placement.
In my conversation with the rider who had one he told me about the way they treat their customers. I'm waiting to order mine until I can speak with them so I can make sure I upgrade my cellphone to one that will work. If it wasn't for that I'd have one now. When traysons bike was stolen he lost his main box but still had all the helmet stuff. When he called they sold him a new box at wholesale and had him send his old helmet gear back, which they replaced with upgraded equipment for free "under warrenty".
Good luck
Mike
Thanks alot Mike thats very helpful. We ended up buying a similar headset from Cycle Gear in Gateway. They dont support some of the other features that the Mottocom does, just basic, but they were $50 per headset (we took the last two). Then we got some Motorola FRS Walkie Talkies with a supposed range of 16 miles max, 1.5 miles in the city. The setup uses a remote handle bar push to talk button. So for us to be able to talk bike to bike, the two of us, cost about $180. We bought the most expensive of the radios, so could be done for cheaper. Thanks again, I'm gonna post this on the main forum for general info. Vinny
