A few friends and myself hit Aufderhide today and on the back side(south) there were 4 or 5 GRAVEL pits stretched across the whole road and are only marked with 1 orange cone on each side!!! The first 1 and 3 pit you encounter comes just as your starting to pick the bike up out of the corner. It was my first time up there, I wish I could tell y'all better were they are at. I know the road was bumpy for a while if that helps anyone? Anyways I had a killer ride(362 miles:ride: ) Absolutely beautiful scenery, perfect weather.

The construction project runs for roughly 20 miles, beginning about 15 miles from Westfir.

It's a continuation of the work that was begun last summer in an effort to prevent wash-outs due to failed culverts.

Each culvert replacement will require the cutting of the road surface completely across the road in a strip that is approximately 3ft wide. When I rode the Aufderheide last Sunday, I counted 23 culverts places along the roadway in prep for replacement.

The contractor does their best to get the road patched by the end of the work week on Friday, they're not always completely successful and the asphalt patch work will run about a week to two weeks after the culvert replacement.

This isn't a 'new' situation on Aufderheide. There's been plenty of notice about the work in the press and there's ALWAYS road condition notices on the USFS website(s).

I want to remind all of you - when you're out wailing around on the back roads there is very rarely cell phone coverage. Keep in mind, it can take well over 2 hours for aid to reach you if you should happen to biff.

No doubt. I rode Aufderheide today (7/29) for the first time, and it was definitely no race-track. It had rocks and gravel in the road and blind, decreasing radius turns. It was tight, but still a lot of fun. It would be real easy to get in trouble, though.

USFS putting a notice on their website(s) does not help someone when they are taking these turns at ANY speed:wtf:. There were NO warning signs of any kind near the gravel pits:mad:. They need to put up a sign at least a 100ft@35mph before the construction zone. Too bad I didn't go down @ 40, I would be sponsoring FREE EugeneSportbike trackdays next summer on my new RC211V:cool:

we're happy you didn't bite it.
Agreed, there should be warnings all over that road. The forum is one way to try and warn folks.
