A Seattle, Washington man was arrested on several charges Tuesday morning in the Roseburg area after multiple attempts to elude Oregon State Police troopers on Interstate 5 southbound from the Eugene area. An OSP trooper tackled the man off his motorcycle before he could flee again after he had mistakenly taken a dead-end gravel road in southeast Roseburg.

On August 7, 2007 at approximately 7:30 a.m. numerous driving complaints of a speeding, reckless motorcycle were reported starting southbound on Interstate 5 south of Albany near milepost 228. No OSP troopers were patrolling between Albany and Eugene. At 8:05 a.m. Trooper Jared McLain spotted the 2005 Yamaha R6 motorcycle southbound at milepost 187 and overtook it, activating his patrol car's emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. The motorcycle sped up to speeds estimated near 130 mph, passing other vehicles between traffic lanes and using the center median as Trooper McLain tried to keep it in sight.

Near milepost 182, Senior Trooper Steven Thrapp had another motorcycle stopped southbound and was monitoring the attempt to elude from Trooper McLain. Senior Trooper Thrapp moved into the southbound lanes and sped up to 90 mph in front of the Yamaha motorcycle to gain the operator's attention and get him to voluntarily stop. The Yamaha motorcycle "slungshot" around Senior Trooper Thrapp as if he was "shot out of a cannon" and eventually disappeared out of the two trooper's sights.

Information was forwarded to Trooper Jason Stedman patrolling north of Roseburg. At about 8:35 a.m. as Trooper Stedman was set up near milepost 142, the Yamaha motorcycle came into radar at 115 mph. Eleven miles later, Trooper Stedman was able to overtake the Yamaha motorcycle near milepost 131 and to stop it. The motorcycle sped up to approximately 130 mph as Trooper Stedman lost sight of it near milepost 127 in the Roseburg area.

Troopers and Roseburg Police officers were unable to find the motorcycle for about five minutes when a citizen reported seeing it on a city street.

Detective Mike Tabor and Trooper Brian Assmus were in an OSP Dodge Charger and spotted the Yamaha motorcycle as it continued in its attempt elude on some area roads. The Yamaha motorcycle ended up taking a dead-end gravel road. As it got to the end, the operator spun the motorcycle around to flee. Trooper Assmus was able to get out of the patrol car and tackled the operator off the motorcycle before he fled again. The operator was taken into custody at about 8:59 a.m.

The operator was identified as JEAN PAUL UNGUREANU, age 24, from Seattle, Washington. Neither Trooper Assmus nor UNGUREANU was injured. UNGUREANU, who admitted his speed was near 150 mph during the incident, said he likes to drive fast and did not want to get another speeding ticket. Troopers learned the Yamaha motorcycle's license plate display bracket was altered to allow the license plate to be flipped up and tucked under the rear fender to avoid reading the plate, and that UNGUREANU exited Interstate 5 at exit 127 and gassed up because he was running out of gas while eluding the officers.

UNGUREANU was lodged in the Douglas County Jail on the following charges:

• Felony Attempt to Elude Police Officers on a Vehicle
• Reckless Driving
• Recklessly Endangering Another Person

He was also cited by Trooper Stedman for Exceeding the Posted Speed in Excess of 100 mph to wit: 115 mph in a 65 mph speed zone, and Unlawful Display of a License Plate related to the altered display bracket.

OSP Trooper McLain drove to the Douglas County Jail and cited UNGUREANU on several traffic-related charges in Lane County including Felony Attempt to Elude, Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Additional citations were reportedly issued including some by Sutherlin Police related to their short involvement in the incident.

guess maybe thats why a Stater came up on me pretty fast out of know where on my way to eugene today. I stayed my speed (75 to 80) and he eventually got bored and cruised right on by me. That was about noon....

u pay to play! nice bike tho...That is not playing! This guy was putting alot of people in danger by his reckless riding. And why? Because he likes to go fast? I love going fast too but I pick and choose when and NEVER put other people at risk.

Dan - point me to the other thread about this incident? I did read the 'pulled over' and the 'whatta moron' threads. Neither has anything to do with this issue.

What we have here is a young 'man' who has a total disregard for his own life or the lives of anyone else. The rider was way over the line. Beyond 'going fast' and well into 'suicidal'.

150mph on the interstate in traffic is far from 'play'.

There are many images on the web of the total devastation caused by an impact lof a motorcycle traveling at high speed with either a fixed object or another vehicle. The kind of impact that rips bodies into little chunks.

What we do (riding motorcycles) is a dangerous sport. Understanding risks and managing those risks are part of riding well. Ripping ass down the interstate isn't exactly what I'd call smart 'risk management technique'.

I don't mean to be coming across as an old fart - I _do_ like to go fast.
I make it a point to bust into 'the ton' as frequently as I can. But, damn - you have to choose where and when with some semblance of intelligence.

So in closing - if you're gonna go fast - please do it in a place and at a time when the only person you're likely to pose a threat to is yourself. Better yet - take it to the track.

What gets me is why this is beig discussed anyway?

Point the guy to the aufderhide and give him a few band-aids for his getoff. We can discuss this until our fingers are worn to the bone and nothing will ever change. Stupid will always be stupid and we can only pray that they don't take someone with them on their way out of the gene pool.

ive rode with exactly one(1) sportbike rider that didnt ride ass. ...way too much money and not enough brain and probably making up for a smaller issue. i dont know but zipping around on the road likes its your own personal race track is selfish and inconsiderate. youll never know whos coming around the corner or what variable is gonna be there. no place on our roads is a safe spot to do 100mph ever. of course it sucks when a zip goes splat but its only a matter of time. this idiot that didnt want a ticket is no different than the speed racers friends of e.d. that are out all summer long. bring on winter.

for sure!!!

in all of the "i only do it in a safe spot" "its my right" "i wait for the right time and wear the right gear" times, its the mini van full of kids or anyone for that matter that see whats left over and has to call for emergency help, then the emts that get there to find parts and pieces and the leos who see this kind of crap on a regular basis and the morgue folks who have to tag and bag, riding ass is far from a single persons right. someone mentioned stupidity and natural selection and its just that. laws and legislation are for idiots. the average person doesnt need a law to say its not good to kill someone...same with the zippers. and though we chat about this, it will continue to go on and on as long as there are bikes and bungs.

I can accept that. I mean I do have alot of company around here from fellow people who ride like ass.

nope not at all.. ie...ass is dragging knees on local highways...and its not about me at all. i dont judge folks against how i do things. riding ass is a simple thing really. treating our local roads like race tracks is riding ass...

race track skills are most impressive on a track where they belong. and not all riders wanna ride racer style or secretly wish they would. and also...it doesnt matter to me how you ride at all, or anyone else for that matter. i ride mine and you ride yours..

Sweetheart, you've got my feathers so ruffled.... You just simply have no clue.

But I'll stop right there and offer up a truce. We'll both hush up on this topic for the sake of the non-confrontational natives that can't handle a hearty discussion. It's probably best that way.

If you really want to get into this further OSB is available. It'd be totally cool there, word is I know one or two of the admin's....

OK.

Everyone stated their opinions, its time to let it drop if you can't accept that there are going to be people that differ than how you yourselves see things. I can see both sides of the coin, but, I am so inclined to keep my own opinion to myself. I don't have a thing to prove to anyone, and I am not going to stir the pot even more by stating what I think.

Carry on, but agree to disagree.

I am sure that all of us decent sportbikers want to be seen as a caring loving family that enjoyes the hell out of their sport. That take responsibilities for their own actions, and choices we make thru out our lives, and care for those that have fallen doing what they love. We put our lives into each others hands when we ride together. We develop a bond and love for each other that no other group or collective understands. It's ok to be different from each other. It's ok to have differing opinions. Don't judge, because each person sees things in a different way.

When people make bad choices and choose to break the law, they should be accountable for their actions if they get caught. Other people other than sportbikers make mistakes and poor choices every day, and there is not a damn thing we can do about it. We move on. Crap happens, and we deal with it.

"Any idiot can go fast in a straight line"
Feel free to use this quote wherever/whenever applicable. I am one of those that prefer taking a curve marked 35 @ 75 to going 175 down a straight road; Where's the challenge? All the latter does is create more prejudice against motorcycle riders.
