View Full Version : Yes, my new bike is toast

In case you didn't read about it in the Laguna Seca Tickets for sale section, here is the story about my accident.... I have heard that versions of it are spreading around town rapidly, so here is the real story....

:crash:
Yep, I crashed my limited edition R1. I had it for a glorious 2 weeks and 1,500 miles. I loved it. I don't believe it was too much power, but not being a very large or strong woman, I had to really throw myself off of the side to take a corner fast. We were coming down from the top of Mary’s Peak and I should have done a “systems check” on how I was feeling when I got back on the bike. I got tired when we were hanging out at the top and really didn’t acknowledge it. About four corners down I was in a really sunny area, then went into a really dark shaded area and by the time my eyes adjusted a corner had snuck up on me. Being on a larger bike I didn’t feel I had time to throw myself off the side far enough to make the corner and so I grabbed some front brake. The side of the road was full of fir-needle debris about a foot or so into the road. When I hit that the bike slid out (low-sided?). I believe I hung with the bike until it hit the soft gravel. Then it flipped the bike over and catapulted me about 20’ in the air, clearing a log, and into the middle of a 20 foot patch of brush, where I rolled head over heals about 4 times. I stopped approximately 40-50 feet down the embankment. Ten feet in either direction and I would have hit large rocks and trees. The bike ended up rolling head to tail down the very steep incline at least 8-10 times, hitting a tree and multiple large rocks. There is virtually nothing unbroken on the bike. The engine case has a hole in it, the sub frame broke OFF on both the front and back. 80 percent of the plastic came off the bike. I truly believe that there was some divine intervention, as I ended up with just a little road rash, a little bruising, and a nickel size deep gouge in my knee. All considering, I am VERY lucky!!! I, by all means, should probably be paralyzed or dead right now. The Joe Rocket Ballistic pants and Shoei helmet definitely saved me. I was actually more sore the week before when I did a super-man air off the dirt bike. (...how I got the matching road rash on the other hip…lol.) I am very sad that the bike is gone, and I won’t be going to Laguna. I was going to get another R1, but I believe that…yes, everyone was right, a 600 would just be much more “flick-able” in the corners. So I am looking at that route this time. It’s just in my personality that if someone tells me that I can’t do something I am damn well going to do it!!! … even if it is not very bright…lol. I have never ridden without full gear, and I feel very fortunate for that. If you are curious as to what the bike looks like after that check out my Myspace pictures at….

Oh Karen! I am SO sorry to hear about your crash! I know how proud and happy you were to have that new bike. I am very glad that you werent more seriously hurt though. Youre a testiment to the fact that what we do and love is enharrently dangerous, but if one takes the time to wear protective gear, you have a much better chance when things go all wrong. Is the insruance company going to cover the cost of the bike?

Thanks! The insurance company and I are now in "negotiations". (They decided it was a total loss...lol...really!?! :wow8: ) I figured that this would happen. I know I paid top $ for the bike when I bought it, because I knew its history I was willing... I never thought I would have to worry about this. Plus there aren't that many limited editions for sale out there. Does anyone happen to know if the '03 limited edition sold for more than the "normal" R1's? I am faxing the bill of sale and an itemized list of the aftermarket stuff to the agent tomorrow. Hopefully I won't lose more than the deductible.

I am sorry about the bike. I am glad to hear that you are ok. That is what matters. You can always get a new bike. And yes the LE is $500.00 more.

Ew, insurance negotiations can be a pain in the rear. Good luck with that, next time there is a gathering, we should get together and trade war stories. :bounce:

I had a "limited edition" Z06 Corvette and they bluebooked it to death when I sold it. In other words, you will have a hard time getting anything for using the limited edition card with the insurance comapny. They dont give a rats ass about anything but giving out the least amount of money as possible.... I am surprised they havent tried to weasel out of it completely.....

Actually, State Farm was great to work with, especially since I just switched to them a little over two weeks ago. I paid $500.00 over RETAIL blue book for the bike and they ended up giving me just $200.00 less than I paid, plus I'll eat the $500 deductible.

Actually, I am going up to Portland this morning pay for, but unfortunately not pick up for a day or two (it's still in a crate), the LAST new Triumph Daytona 675 in the country!

:bounce:

I am soooo excited! I think I am starting to get a little nervous to get back on, but I'm sure that will go away fairly quickly.... I think I am done trying to prove to myself that I can keep up with the front guys. I still want to be around to ride for a LOOOONG time. I just hope I am over the need to ride on the edge for that really good adrenaline rush.

"it's okay to ride on the edge.... as long as you don't go over it" ... guess I got confused about that last part....

Awesome news on the new bike. I can say, after having a fairly bad wreck, that I am fully comfortable on the back of a bike now. Just take your time, and don't push yourself. Only go outside your comfort zone for a few seconds or minutes, not for a long time. Don't scare yourself. I am sure you will be leading the pack here soon enough. You are kind of a legend around these here parts...

 Thanks!!! I am not sure if I am a legend for being fast, being a fast GIRL, or for doing the best "throw your bike off of a mountain side"...but hey, I'll take what I can get...lol.

Can I be runner-up for best "Throw your bike off the side of a mountain award"?

Good thing I didn't take that to the insurance company, they would have totaled it before I dragged it home. :crash: :mecry:
