Just a heads up... On a previous ride last week the gravel was REALLY bad on the road that runs between Lorane and Cottage Grove... but... we rode it again today and it was MUCH better. There was only two corners that I saw that had gravel.
Word to the wise though...don't try to take Brice Creek road all the way to Oakridge... we learned today what it felt like riding sportbikes over 10 miles of (sometimes really thick!) gravel roads...it's amazing that all three of us kept the rubber side down, and the  side up!

+1 on the lorane Highway. I was up there today and I must have passed a dozen dump trucks loaded with gravel. guess it is pretty much gonna suck for the rest of the summer. Also road construction up the wang. brush cutter, log trucks, etc.

Perfect today. (8-27-06) Felt good and noticed no gravel. Somebody needs to do something about the "washouts" though......... jeeeEEeeezzzzzz!
............. :ride:...................... :ride: .........
The Cottage Grove to Oakridge route is definitely paved. Do any of you run GPS? I'll upload tracks to my website (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/)by next Friday.
There are a few tricky turns and misleading signs.
For those who don't have GPS, I could lead a small group Sept 28. I ride a DL1000 and won't be quite as quick :mecry: . Still, you shouldn't be too bored.

i hate that sharp (maybe 25mph) corner with the gravel turn out off to the east side of the road, that corner ALWAYS has some gravel.

I really wanna ride the Cottage Grove to Oakridge route!
I finally drove it at the end of last summer, and it didn't look very bike friendly... unless your rolling on a dual-sport. (if your talking about the route that starts off of Brice Creek Rd -FSR#22 that is) :crash:

I think that's it. The one I was looking at is posted here: http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=brice
What specifically makes it not bike friendly? Just asking in case I decide to do it - I want to know what I'm in for!

The article was pretty accurate. It took me about 4 tries in a year (with a Register Guard article that had pretty crappy directions) to make it all the way through (a couple times we got stopped by high snow in the fall/winter). The road is not well marked, VERY poor in a few spots (makes that bumpy part of Territorial look smooth), LOTS of gravel, the road becomes less than 1 lane in many places, and I seem to remember alot of moss even in the summer... It did look like a great road for bicycles, dual sports, or if you were bored and just wanted to putt around very slowly. It is no Wolf Creek or Aufderheide for sure. I may run it again on a dual sport this summer and give it one more chance though, I'm guessing the presence of law enforcement is pretty much non-existant out there.

Oh, and the 10 miles of gravel road that I mentioned in the first part of the thread is actually if you take FSR#17 to Oakridge, not the Brice Creek route. The FSR#22 route is rough, but not that rough. Chris (red R1), Ron, and I ended up taking #17 over last year, it was an adventure on the bikes. I am amazed that none of us dropped our bikes in the 10 miles of 3-4" deep gravel roads it took to get there!

Heads up!
My nepew just called me from the sacred heart emergency room after putting his van in a ditch just past peaceful valley while trying to avoid a deer. He said he has seen at least 20 in the last couple of days on his way to and from work. Groups of 3 and 4 mostly. He said he knew that some of us ride out there, and wanted to tell everyone to be careful!!!!!
He is going to be ok, couple of bruised ribs and a really sore shoulder.
Peace,
B

There is one patch of new gravel fairly close to CG. It's just where you're starting to get into the hills and twistie parts on the CG side. Well marked with caution signs. It's about 50' long. Lots of white marks on road, perhaps more to come.
The rest of the road was wonderful.
