greetings all... another more immediate issue has come up. my clutch has taken second to the running gear.... chain, counter and final driven sprocket. so what im interested in is that maybe one of you have the deal to press the o-ring master link together that you could come use for me OR if not, ill buy the thing and you could supervise me using the press deal. im hoping to find one of you all that has this thing as another 60 dollars plus could be another part thats on the get list..(next month will be replacing the handlebars on the 919)...anyways.. it seems that ive been needy lately but really this isnt normal for me... you know.. anyways.. thanks!!!!

Joe Joe has one. I borrowed it before. I am sure I can get it, but Shawn has it out at the coast right now. As soon as he gets it back... I'll talk to Joe today when I see him at work.

Putting the link on is not that hard. I can supervise...... :blah-blah

ok... so things are getting back into place and i bought this motion pro tool, a mini chain press because 1.the guy said it was what i needed to put the chain together and 2. it was all they had. so the thing is ..... i cant figure out how it would stake the pins? the directions say nothing of it, just the pressing together part. what am i missing or did ol boy not know exactly what tool i need? anyone?? mike??? ill run over to the coast if i have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. this means im stuck on the nine one nine again for tomorrow. good news is that ive figured out the best way to sit on the thing and not get buzzed up or have pelvic spazams. there might be hope. anyways...
mike??

I can't think straight right now (long day at work), but if no one throws out an answer before I get back on here. I'll try to walk you through it. I have put on my last few chains, make that all of my chains.

....brains starting to thaw....

So you just wanna know how to start the pins into the other side of the master link?

I'm sure everyone has there own way of doing this, but I prefer to make it a little easier on myself and use a drill press or dremel tool to just slightly enlarge the very edge of the inside hole in the outside plate of the master link. So the pins will rest in on the very edge of the two holes. Then clean all of the metal shavings off of the plate. Mount the chain, place the master link through both ends, press the plate to the outside of the master link and use the tool to press it down. If the plate keeps moving around enlarge the edging that you made on the outer plate. You just want the posts to sit up against the plate and not move around, so the edging should not be drilled deep. (I hope some of this is making sence, cause it was a LONG week and I am running on fumes....)

Hopefully this will allow you to start pressing the plate onto the chain. Keep pressing the plate down until you have it about equal with the links on either side of the master link. Then peen down the ends of the master link posts.

Ride the chain and check it a couple times to make sure everything is staying put. But pretty much once a press-type master link is on, its going to stay on....(famous last words. At least now I know how I am going to die. :smilewink )

Thats it.

ok.. thanks for the response tom.. :) i got the pressing part, its the peening the posts that i was missing out on.. :) thank you again. not bad for fumes!!
heres the deal.. dude at the shop was not correct about the tool he reccomended. so, i have ordered the correct tool for the job. it will be here mon or tue. its on after that. in the meantime, ill ride the nine one nine and spend extra time cleaning my bike.
note to self.. have tools before you start. at least this will never happen again. by then i should be sufficiently soaked in kerosene, grease, road grime and the like..

Glad your getting it all worked out, Jennifer.

Sorry for misunderstanding you question. Yeah, a lot of the chain press tools do not include the peening attachment. I got an all in one set, but it cost me a bill. So I will hopefully use it for the rest of my like, to make the purchase worth while. :smilewink

hooray hooray!! guess what finally came in?? my new tool!! yay hooray! one can NEVER have enough tools. now i can put my bike back together and get the hell off that nine one nine.. not that im bitching because one could be in a position with no bike and would totally suck. anyways... mike if you need a reason to come bark at someone feel free to stop by. i did read the directions and it seems to be fairly idiot proof. guess well find out if im an idiot or not. heheh.. anyways... yay for new tools!!! (and if i can figure out pic posting i might do that as well after).....

omg... this has totally become an issue. so where i stand now is.. after a back ordered chain tool, then ordered from a different source piece meal THEN the stock house shipping the wrong sized master link, the bike shop ordering the wrong type master link(clip instead of o-ring) and then not ordering the thing as promised... i told the guy to just order oem from honda even though its a simple 525 RK link. argh!! so today, after three other for nothing trips into town, my CORRECT master links(one for the parts bin) and other o-ring for the counter sprocket have finally arrived. in the entire time ive owned my bike, bought new in 02, it has never been down this long. the last ride on it was 31jan. of course like i had mentioned, at least i wasnt bikeless and had the 919 to ride. speaking of... because my bike has been out, i was FORCED to ride the previously never rain ridden bike in the rain. not just sprinkles but all out pouring rain. and more than once. its 13march and we all know how many times its rained in the last six weeks. so feeling bad, today...after 150+ road miles with one very close call, a rock to the knee and a meet up with the local squid, i washed the bike. its gonna take another wash or two to get back to good but its a start. one hates to waste any riding day with washing nonsense. anyways... since im in the middle of a chemo run with mom, a big opry show tomorrow(in eug @ WHS in case anyone is bored), a taxi to the airport on sunday and a back that is screaming, i will take a deep breath and relax. then i will pull all the crap off that needs be to get to the counter sprocket to swap out a tiny o-ring and then i will put my chain together with my new tool and then FINALLY i will have my bike back and life will be good. BTW, the reason i had to wait on another master link is because i pressed the plate on about two thousandths to tight( .002") which isnt a whole lot but im only dealing with about .005" to begin with and i just couldnt pop the thing off and do it again because how bad would it suck to have to go through this again becasue i didnt do something to spec. i mean, why have tolerances if you could just do it your own way anyway? blah blah blah.... thats what it is. simple.

ITS DONE!! finally its done! after losing the entire month of feb and half of this month, its finally done.
lessons learned
1. have all tools before you begin and dont assume that bike shops or stock houses have them in stock.
2. start with a stocked parts bin.
3. dont rely on bike shops to order the correct part no matter how simple it is.
4. rely on yourself to get things done. if you dont know how to do it, try it anyways.
5. double check all spec measurements. 20-30mm is far smaller than one would think. my inch measurement is off as well...by a few thousandths.

so now i will go road check my work. its gonna be so nice to be off the nine one nine. i have missed my bike and missed out on close to 1500 miles. the miles werent totally lost because i put them on the other bike, but now my yearly will be off. anyways... i would post pictures but ill not bore you all any further.

work done....
replaced counter and final driven sprockets
replaced chain
replaced counter sprocket bolt o-ring
if i had the tool to start and the bin full, this would have only taken a couple of hours at most. i did wash(in the bath tub and sink) the back half of the bike and waxed. hehehe. FINALLY!
