how much is it to buy slicks and have them mounted at a trackday? i've heard the track is the best place to get them?

also,

i was practicing some hard stops from 100-130mph. i noticed at higher speeds(75+) the front wheel starts to want to wobble when you're close to 100% breaking. is this a sign of about to lose traction? i always thought you'd flip over forwards before you lose traction doing straight breaking. any of you trackies know about this sort of thing? my tires now are pilot power 2ct's and i'm running 40psi on the back and 38 on the front.... i think...

First why get slicks for the street you will never get them to temp for great grip get a set of dot race just give lots of time for them to warm up and psi is important for grip and warm up. For me I never have a tire that hard the front could of been getting loose but my guess would be the rear was barley on the ground and was moving around. For the track gas hard bake hard = tire warm after a couple laps

well..racier tires then i have now. i don't want to ride on the street that much if at all anymore anyway. you know how much dot tires are?

+1 on the unweighting of the rear tire. If the front tire were moving around it would move to one side, you would have lost the front end and dropped the bike. When the rear end is unweighted, or even in the air, you feel it through the handlebars. So it can feel like the front end is moving around.

And yes you are correct, if you progressively apply the front break on any modern sportbike, you will loop the bike before the front tire slides out. (except in situations where you do not have adequate traction: oil, gravel, moss, etc.)

2CTs are about as racy as they come. Unless you have completed a novice race season (and graduated), you are not going to exceed the potential of the tires. You could push them past their traction limits, but that would be from riding outside of your abilities, not out riding the potential of the tire.

Totally not trying to bash or anything, case in point...

I low-sided by R6 last season on the stock Dunlop tires, not because I out road them. I just didn't let them heat up enough, and pushed the bike too hard into the corner. Simple rider error. But I am not going to go get stickier tires. The tires I have are fine. I just have to ride them right.

The 2cts are a street/ trackday tire they area good tire I know lots who run them. tires are a real personal thing to us some like dunlop others hate them. For me I wont run 2cts again I just cooked them and I lost confidence in them on the track so I pulled a set of new tires and sold them. I have also heard of others having wear issues with them but that is on 1000s not 600s just easier to cook a tire with more power. :2cents:

I hear you have to have 80% tread to do a trackday.. which i would like to do this season... but i dont have much money. my tires are about 30%. so i figured i might as well get some slicks/sorta slicks... i guess another pair of 2cts would be a better investment than a pair of race tires anyway... they would last longer.

i heard from someone on a kawi forum to buy race tires from dr sticky or mr sticky or something like that... maybe it was local to him/race oriented... i donno. but he said buy tires from ppl at the track.

by riding outside my limits you mean not having proper body position or feedback response or what? i'm not trying to defend my skills by any means... i can get my knee on the ground in a parking lot but i'm just goin off of youtube instructions... ;)

How do you like the pilot powers, eddy? I need to get new tires myself.

I LOVE Powers.... Just my .02 they are a great tire, and I am running the plain Powers, track and street, good life and no traction issues. If your looking for cheap track day tires, look for a set of take offs. Pop them on before the day. A lil work, but if you hunt around you can get them for $100-150 a set, and they should have plenty of life in them.

Also, you can brake hard enough to skid the front tire on clean pavement without looping the bike. Seen it done a few time....LOL... However when this is done the street is not the only place skid marks are left, if you catch my drift.:wow8:

dont you normally see that in a grab a bunch of brake on cold tires not just over loading them with a progressive pull. I could also see it i with too high of air pressure

the powers are good. i've pushed them past the edge of the rear and they feel solid. and the middle is noticeably harder than the edges so long straight rides won't wear it out really fast. Canti, we should go ride soon.

what taser test?

are you gonna tase me?

i don't break that hard from that speed unless i'm wearing my one peice (which makes me look like a giant american flag riding down the street cuz it's red and white and my bike is blue) and my boots and back protector and on a emtpy wide open road... la dee da.

would i get in trouble for dragging my knee in a parking lot?

count you in!! that makes 5!! perfect! i dont think ill be doing the tasing, i along with fj will be far too busy making scientific observations.

of course you wouldnt be in trouble for the knee drag. i just think it would make a good start to taser 2009.

good luck with the tires.

they will be tires that
i could still use at the track if i were
willing to slow down
not that i;m super fast or anything
but you will be able to use them at
slow to medium TRACK pace riding
and they are good for at least 1000
street miles
i just got home from being gone for ten days
so give me a day or 2 to settle in and
i'll shoot you my phone number

if it's your first track day, I would advise taking it easy and learning as much as possible. Honestly, no one at the track will care how fast you are or if you can get a knee down, but they will care if you crash and take them out while over riding your abilities. I don't think I have met or ridden with you, so I am of course just speaking in generalities. The most important thing you can do at a track day is to just have fun and enjoy yourself without added pressure. Most sport bike tires are more then what a first time track day rider will use. I did mine on Pirelli Diablo's. Tires held up just fine.... my :2cents:

yeah, i'm just worried about tread. correct me if this is wrong, but my tires now don't have the required 80% to get on the track.

Well you could try to get through tech, but I think you have the right idea addressing this before you get to the track. Less stress for your first day, if you don't have to worry about the tires.

worst case they'll tell you be careful and you should get new tires befor the days over
unless you have cord showing
