Hey Windburnt are you running 180/55's on your R1? How do you like them compared to the stock 190/50's?

I seem to like the 180's better. Seems like they roll the bike faster. I think 190's have more patch of rubber to the road. Dont really remember the factory 190's to much. I changed to 180's after the first 4000 miles. I know have some 180's pilot racer take-offs. Haven't had time to rip them up yet though. Hoping for the next 80-90* sunny day.

check the profiles on the tires. for the 1000's having a wider tire is way better. if you are looking for take offs, see if you can find some 195/60's. that is what i run on my 600. if you had 16.5's id have some take offs for ya....

I have also been running 180/55 on the rear for over 2 years and have yet to slip around a corner (I'm no noob - I can ride). It was good enough for the AMA racers at the time and has been good enough for me as well.
There is no question that a 190/50 offers a larger contact patch, but that comes at price. The question is do you need a larger contact patch. I don't feel I do, and I like the taller profile, lower price, and smaller mass of the 180/55. I am considering trying a 190/55 next time if I can get a reasonable price. If I do that I'll see if the added rubber is worth the extra mass.
Something to keep in mind for the speed oriented: Reductions in rotating mass (wheels, tires, chains, sprockets, cams, etc) have a greater effect on acceleration & top speed (and thus, perceived horse power) than static mass. That is why racers go with lighter aftermarket wheels when the rules allow, and why they use smaller sprockets both front & rear (and hence can use a smaller, and thus lighter chain).
I'm not advocating small tires. I am suggesting you find the balance that works best for you, keeping all the variables in mind. :)

well said... for most riders a 180/55 is more than enough. Even on the track most people are running that size on all the bikes. it is very dependant on how much you wanna spend on your tires :idunno:

He can set you up with the tires locally that you're looking for. He's got pretty reasonable prices.
