View Full Version : noise limits?

howdy all... lately more so than ever, theres been talk of limiting the noise/sound coming from bike. i think denver passed an ordinance dealing with this.. so what do we all think about this?? lets keep it to motorcycles and leave out the coffee canned imports and lifted super swampered 'rural' trucks for simplicity.. therefore... what about the harleys that rattle the pictures off the living room walls as they purposely blast by?? or the track sounding sportbikes?? and all the ratty bikes in between? what are the thoughts on this?? (and o yeah, leave out the off road bikes/quads/etc as well)
so, should street bikes of any flavor be legislated to a certian level of sound?? why/why not..
Well you could go both ways on this. I love the sound of a loud race-tuned sportbike, on the track or on the street. I highly dislike the loud Harley's and cruisers. Just my opinion though. I think that more than a noise restriction, people need to learn basic respect when it comes to area of town, time of day, etc. If you have a really loud harley or sportbike, and you are coming home at 10pm, keep it quiet and in the lower revs. If it's middle of the day, in high traffic and on a main street, who cares. Sometimes in these situation, it can even be a safety feature for us sportbikes who tend to be slightely smaller and sometimes less noticable in heavy traffic than cars and bigger bikes.
I personally love a good sounding, loud sportbike. lol
But if you want to get technical...it's already illegal to put any kind of aftermarket exhaust on your bike (or car, truck, etc...).

Yep yep... I believe 82 decibles is the limit, but I can check... What pisses me off is you always here people bitch about the sport bikes and vroom vroom imports, but never a word about the unbaffled harleys that are all over.... :wife

What about the damned stereo woofers that vibrate my home from 3 blocks away!!!
then they're stupid enough to put thier children in the vehicle with all that damaging noise going on. Isn't that reckless endangerment?

Its not illegal until you start messing with the catalytic converter. As long as you meet emission and noise standards I believe you can slap on just about anything you want. The question is, how many systems meet those requirements? Some shops(cars, not sure about bikes) wont even touch your vehicle if it requires any modification or deleting the cat. I got turned down by a lot of shops when I wanted to straight pipe my Dodge Cummins :D.

As far as noisy bikes - I love it as long as it doesnt resemble any kind of ricer with a fart can exhaust. Noise doesnt bother me - its the crap that comes out of the exhausts that messes with me.

I don't really care for noise...
One that that makes me laugh is when a old civic has loud exhaust that screams but the car cannot go!!!
I assume if you put a loud (race) exhaust you should at least deserve it lol

Emergency vehicles are the ONLY thing you alter the exhaust on. "legally" you can only replace your stock exhaust with stock parts, from the factory

so what about the legisltion thats coming??
82 decibels mike?? that isnt very loud. whens the last time you wrote someone for that? how do you check exactly??
fj, same thing. the bump bump from across town. its a contributing to folks wanting to keep these things in check. and i cant remember exactly how you explained the noise thing how sound travels etc. what was that again??
i personally dont favor continuing to make laws and such for these kinds of things but on the other hand, there are several offenders that run this road day and night blasting their choice be it moto, car or stereo that have gotten to be quite the nuissance(sp?). i could care less how youwant to sound, but at 2am it becomes a bit irritating when its over and over. they say that their loud pipes save lives, but sometimes i wanna kill a loud piper for scaring my dogs, zapping me outta bed when i already cant sleep time and time again!!!! of course not literaly right?? anyways...

i think it is a horrible idea, if somone cant hear me while im riding next to them it is a hazard for me and the driver, if somthing like this does come to some effect than i think that any harley out on the road needs to be muffled blind people are complaining that prius's are to quiet why would you want to make bikes more quiet? as a matter of fact i belive they are going to start putting somthing on those stupid cars to make them louder. im all against making bike less noticable.

Sorry Matt, but I'm fairly certain that's dead wrong. If it were correct, it would be illegal for tuning shops to install aftermarket exhausts. I've had shops do this, and I know other's that have as well (cars as well as motorcycles). They won't circumvent the catalytic converter, but they will install aftermarket exhausts, so either it IS legal, or they are knowing breaking the law...

I was gonna say if its illegal, how do companies like Muzzy, Vance and Hines, Yoshi (all bike world stuff) and Hedman, Hooker, and Borla (all car world stuff) get away with making their products? I know there are regulations governing catalytic converters, but I've never seen anything in the ORS's let alone federal statutes about altering exhaust components, so long as it meets the maximum decibel limit and/or conforms to the limits within certain regulations pertaining to classes of cars (for example, oregon has a provision for classic cars which has a different noise limit than that of "regular" cars). Trust me, I've had police officers throw the ORS's at me tryin to get me for stuff on my hotrod when I was in highschool, and I'm sure they woulda nailed me for illegal exhaust if they could have...actually they tried but it passed the sound-check. ;)

Many of the exhaust systems you mention are sold as "race only" or "not street legal" which is how they can get away with it. A shop *could* claim they didn't know you intended to use it on the street when they installed it. However, most of those same manufacturers also offer street legal kits, yet another indication that aftermarket exhausts are not inherently illegal.

Because it's not illegal to make them:thumbup:. Most cops either just don't know of simply don't care if it's an aftermarket system. Every shop i've worked at has at one time or another had people in there checking things out making sure we weren't doing any exhaust systems:yes:

Soon it will all be a moot point. Electric bikes are right around the corner. read this months Motorcyclist. There will even be the first ever alternate fuels race at Ilse of Man TT this year. Several interesting rides about to become available. some with good performance numbers, both street and dirt. I say good riddance to traffic noise altogether. I will miss a good tuned motor though...

The zero would make a great toy or commuter not a bad price either. What I'm really excited about is the Mission type bike, but they need to come way down in price and reduced charge time before they'll be practical. It's only a matter of time. :clapping:

Unless your a shop such as Goofy's Muffler and Brakes or Eugene Muffler and Brake who sell and install full systems. They just wont mess with the Cat is all.
Forgot about AA Northwest Custom.

If they can make THIS (http://www.teslamotors.com/) in a sports car, bikes shouldn't be that hard.

i think the problem is size.. thats not an issue in a car but on a bike size and weight makes it a different story. its a step in the right direction for sure but bikes that act like gas and give you a tanks worth of miles before a charge are a ways off.

As far as the exhaust goes... most cops don't care... as long as you not running through town in 1st, motor screaming.... Also, you need a meter to test the sound level at so many feet from the exhaust at so many RPM's... so it takes the meter (read $$$$$$) and two cops (read $$$$ and no time...LOL).... or you can crawl under and read the muffler on the cat... eaiser on the bikes... look at a stock can and it advised the noise limit the can meets.
They have the meters at the coast on the dunes all the time... and the fine is hefty from what I hear when your over.....
The booming stereo is much easier to cite for, all it has to be is plainly audiable (sp?... drinking) from 50 feet... and the Oregon Appelet and Supreme courts have said that is " distinguishable beat or rhythm"
Just some FYI....

" distinguishable beat or rhythm"....
wouldnt "that harley sound" qualify then? or were they specifically going on for the stereo thumpers?

No, different statute.... Stereo is "Unreasonable Sound Amplification"

So, I have a yoshi pipe on my bike. Is that going to be a problem when I go to register it and get Oregon plates?

unlikely... as long as youre insured and legal biked, all you gotta do is pay. ive never heard of bikes being checked for sound or whatever..
