This is never good news.
I have several friends that ride a wide variety of bikes and I'm always holding my breath that they aren't in the news.

I've ridden with some of the members of the group he was with. My experience was that they were good riders, and very ATGAT (All the Gear All the time). Sounds like he had only owned his 990 a few weeks. could be rider error.... never met him, bud God speed.
