I've only done Aufderhiede twice, once in each direction, but I definitely prefered running it from 126 to 58. The sneaky corners were much friendlier in that direction. PLus, once you get done...you're pretty much home!

Keshtie, if you are headed out from the 126 side (probably easier to find it that direction), you go east on 126 towards bend & sisters. before you get to that store/gas station on the right thats all by itself there will be a sign that says "Aufderheide" "Cougar Resevoir" (i know i spelled that wrong) "hwy ___" (i cant remember what number it is)... its just past the Blue River area. anyways... turn right at that sign. eventually it'll dump you out in Westfir/Oakridge... its a beautiful ride! bummed you cant make it... i'd love to meet you one of these days!

I had been keeping tabs on this thread because I knew I would only have time to make that run on Saturday and, time permitting, wanted to give a heads up on any unmarked trouble spots. Alas, I ONLY got back into town about an hour ago, but it sounds as though it was all good.

I remember your bike now Dan! Lovely! Tom used to have an RC30, #4 off the assembly line. We lucked up when we found it. Loved riding that bike. I have thought about parking over there where you park but since my legs are short and the bike is tall, I have to be careful where I put myself! I don't roll in until 1pm so the parking was always packed. I was lucky if I could park all the way over to the right by the entrance. Usually some yokel would block everything!! The woman who works the parking stucture had the nerve to tell me not to block anyone in!!! I asked her where she would recommend I stuff this bike!!! She didn't have an answer. Facilities said someone offered to draw up a plan and they would paint up parking spaces but that never happened. And now it's getting yuky out so most people won't ride. I don't know how much longer I will. Riding home at 10:30pm (we live south of Creswell) is getting uncomfortable. Not just the time of night or the animals, but the cold and rain are a real deterrent!

We were bringing up the rear...we prefer to relax and enjoy. The ride, weather, scenery and company (when together) were wonderful! Bowling sounds fun you guys! :ride: Well here is the update for everyone. I spoke with the dealer today and they said that all of the intake valves are bent and allowing about 50-70% blow-by on all cylinders. They are going to pull the head and let me know what else they find today. They think that the head may have popped off of one of the valves and it is bouncing off the face of the piston. Basically, my motor is f***ed! The warranty ran out two months ago(I purchased it in Aug. '05) and Yamaha has a good-faith policy that will cover things like this IF it is the result of a manufacturing defect which isn't looking good for me right now. When I spoke with the service guy today he said that all of the intake valves will have to be replaced and possibly the head, piston/s, and cylinder which would cost almost $2000 just in parts alone. :wow8:Needless to say, I am NOT HAPPY!:crying::censored: If this is what I can expect from a 1 year old bike with only 17000 miles on it then this will probably be the last Yamaha that I buy. That is very painful for me to say because I am a hardcore Yamaha guy, at least I used to be. We will see if Yamaha steps up or not, if they don't and it is as bad as they think it is then I am just going to put in a complete used motor(found one with 100 miles on it for $1500) and then start saving my pennies for the MV Agusta 910 Brutale:drool:. Well enough of my rant. One of these days I will get through the Aufderheide without any problems, I hope. Thanks again to everyone for a fun ride up to the point that mine stopped and a HUGE thanks to Tom and Jo for the lift home(I still want to buy you guys dinner sometime):lets-eat:. wow. that really really sucks... i'm so sorry to hear that james! yamaha better back that up, i cant see how it could be considered anything other than a manufacturing defect... if they cant put together a motor that can last longer than a year, then its hardly your fault! good luck with everything... but on the otherhand, i'd love to see you rolling around on the MV... those are SO beautiful!!!

Got a call from the dealership today and it wasn't what they were expecting. They said that it spun a rod bearing on cylinder #2 and the crank, connecting rod and piston are wasted, the head and valves are just fine. They said that they think that Yamaha WILL cover this and are calling them on Tuesday to find out. They said that they will have to replace the crank, connecting rod, main bearings, piston, wrist pin and bearing and all of the gaskets and seals required to do it. They also said that the compression loss that they had measured was being caused by carbon build up on the valves preventing them from fully seating which they can disassemble the head and clean them up and adjust the valves for around $250-$300 which I have no problem paying them to do if Yami picks up everything else like they think they will. Finally some good news, I will keep my fingers crossed on this one.

It didnt lose its timing so I knew I was right. When someone said it dropped a valve I almost laughed out loud.... but didnt.
Spun a bearing. Now why in the heck would that happen.......? I know! The torque spec from the factory WAS FUGGERED. Thats got YAMAHA written all over it. As for the valve bullcrap, they are trying to cover their own azzes for giving you a story without even looking what happened. What is lucky is that the piston rod didnt let go and smack the crap out of the head and then whack itself into the side of the block. The main bearings are a safe replacement and should be done since the one rod was not torqued and the crank needs to be replaced anyway

Are they liner type cylinders? Since the "valves" were not seating, I would be asking about SCORING on the cylinder walls and why arent they replacing the motor since its ALL YAMAHA! You pay your "warranty" extension and your done. No valve job, no nothing.

Faulty compression test...... HA HA HA HA HA AHAAHAHAHA !!!!!

Dont let um screw you. Just my :2cents:

Still waiting to hear back from Yamaha as to whether or not they are going to cover any or all of it. They told me that the repair bill at this point would be $2500.:yell:

Wow! For such a new bike I would start hammering on the service manager. Also worth noting and maybe someothers can provide some insight as they work more directly with this type of stuff but I know that car manufactures have an annual allotment in $'s that they can use in situations where your car hits 37k and you blow an engine (i.e, you warrenty just went out but there was something wrong with the vehicle). Basically, just a "make it right" fund. Might be worth working that angle just to get a resolution. :2cents:

The service manager said that Yamaha has a "good faith" program and is really good about this kind of stuff. He is really trying to help me. He went as far as to send them the VIN from the 2004 FZ6 that I had bought to show them that I bought a new bike in '04 and another new one in '05.

I would tell them to take their $2500 dollar bill and shove it up their slanted pucker place! Then I would be raisin holy hell..... Totally!! There is no way in hell that I am going to drop that much to fix it. Besides, I can't afford it right now. If Yamaha f's me over then I will just bring it home in pieces and buy a motor off of Ebay for around $1500 and put that in instead.

See it works like this. The smaller company that is affiliated with the Yamaha name and is a dealership HAS TO PROVE to Yamaha that it is a failure due to "whatever". The little dealer has to send the part, or parts in. Then BIG Yamaha decides whether they will foot the bill. Usually this is a easy process in Warranty, and is accepted fast and easy, but when it goes out of warranty then the problems start such as Yamaha leaving the bill for diagnosis and repair on the little dealership. The smaller dealership having to JUSTIFY reasoning, and manhours for pulling apart things. Not paying for failed parts (even though it obviously OEM failure), etc....

Im pretty sure I know why they are giving you a hard time.......

Well I finally heard back from Yamaha today and surprisingly they are going to cover the whole thing, labor and everything!:yes: I have to give major props to the service manager here at the Oregon City Action Motor Sports because he went well beyond what he had to in order to get them to cover it. He is going to be getting a couple cases of Corona from me when I pick up my bike. I am soooo happy that I can continue to love Yamaha, talk about outstanding customer support!:clapping:

Well, I wouldnt be too excited until its done. I dont think the heartache and problems with the "round-de-round-whos paying what", was any fun either. Just because they say they cover it, shouldnt include the DRAMA and problems that was involved in the process.
So far it sounds like you got a motor back, and rightfully so. Its all on Yamaha by the way its sounds.

I know I would be asking about whats covered if anything starts acting weird again.

Well, at leat it broke down while the weather is crappy so I haven't missed out on too much riding. They said that it will be done in a couple weeks. I will definitely be asking about what happens if there are problems like this in the future. I am sure that it will be fine. I haven't heard about people having this happen to their R1's before so I don't think that it is very common. I can't wait to ride again, ahhhh!:ride:
