I just wanted to b*tch & moan. I rode all winter last year. Cold, rain, whatever... this year I am still babying the new bike and didn't want to take it out when the roads were wet...so it has sat for THREE months!!! When it is dry.. I am working 12 hour days... or the roads are frozen and there is a 20' ice flow across the street right below my driveway :mecry: . So this morning I say SCREW IT:bash:! I am taking the bike to work even if the streets are wet...I only have to be there a few hours. I have to charge the battery before I leave.. keep in mind...this is about 4am. Apparently the 12 minute ride there is not long enough to make it keep the charge:idunno:...grrr! So I got to wait for about two hours to have it :censored: towed back to my house after work. I am just hoping that I didn't screw up the battery permanently by letting it run down a couple times. So today I decided, to hell with it, I am riding the darned thing in the rain now...
WHEW, I feel much better, thanks for letting me complain!

PS... thank GOD for AAA+!
...also... Can you jump a bike battery off of a car battery? I didn't know for sure and didn't want to risk it.

Awwwww...Im sorry Karen. If it makes ya feel any better, my battery was deader than a doornail the last time I went to ride it as well. Warrantee work if ya ask me. glad youre getting out there and riding though.

Yah, it was destined to be a bad bike morning... I forgot to mention all the little gravel they put down for the ice...oh...and the BLACK COW that was in the middle of the road at 4am!!! I stayed home and did nothing the rest of the day. Just figured it might be wise after a morning like that. :runaway:

To all of you.
Don't you all know about battery tenders? Mine is on all the time when I know there's no riding to be had. Ask Santa for one right now!!!!
Oh and remember the Stabil in your fuel.
  Just to rub it in......I rode yesterday and it was delightful!

Oh I know all about battery tenders. I've got one of those and a battery charger too... but when you have a van, two cars, two motorcycles, two dogs, firewood to chop, and an acre and a half to take care of by yourself...sometimes things slide...:idunno:
Waiting for the tow truck for two hours was enough to put ~hooking the battery tender up~ on my "more important" list of things to do.
PS... and please don't tell me I should sell some of my toys...They all serve a purpose and I happen to LIKE chaos thank you very much.

Would never think of it!!! Not just the boys need their toys! Especially when you have to deal with the everyday crap by yourself! Those "TOYS" are what keep us sane!
Now.....don't nobody go south with this discussion of "TOYS" O.K?

Karen, you can jump the bike with a car. BUT BE WARE, the car must NOT be running when you do or it will lead to bad results. I have had to jump mine several times last year when my battery failed on me. just move the car into postion, shut it off, hook up cables, jump, and remove cables. on a caveat, the batteries that come into todays sport bikes are for the most part gel filled sealed batteries and they will not tolerate charging / discharging. they fail after too many attempts. My best advice is to do like Tess's mom said and and just spend the extra 30 bucks for another tender. if you don't have the flow right now being the holidays and all you can borrow mine for the time being. I have had the luxury to ride frequently and don't need it right now. glad you at least got to ride a little,
Dan

actually, I meant to say I have a charger / trickle charger. worth thier weight, it's slow to charge the battery, but once it's done it keeps a trickle charge on it to keep it prepped. batteries plus has good deals on them sometimes.

Thank you for the offer, I think the battery tender will work... now that I actually have it hooked up.
Am I reading you right that the battery may be toast if its been discharged 3-4 times?

I am such a whore, I just let my battery go dead whenever it wants to :o. All I do is just push start it whenever I need to, which really isn't that often. But seriously, isn't that the real reason to have a little light sportbike. Usually doesn't take much more than pushing it a couple feet down a driveway or off of a curb....:2cents:

Am I reading you right that the battery may be toast if its been discharged 3-4 times?unfortunatly. being that your bike is new and thus so is the battery, you might be ok. sometimes they can handle the abuse I would charge it for at least a day +, then operate per normal to see how she does. only real conflict that I noticed is that I had the same problem when my gel battery went. it lasted long enough to get me to work, but leave it sit for a couple hours and I got that dreadful fuel pump priming over and over sound as it couldn't get enough juice to kick her over. best bet would be charge for a day or two, go for a ride, then leave her in the garage overnight and try to start her the next afternoon.... a good 8 to 12 hours of downtime. if she fires right up with no dragging you're good. or you could just go to Jerry's and by a voltage tester to see if she's holding a charge:rolleyes:

Tom... you'll have to show me how you push start your bike sometime (pretty please!). I have bump-started plenty of dirtbikes but I was way too paraniod to try to do it on the streetbike. Maybe if I watched it... I would be brave enough next time. :)

Step 1) Find bike battery deader than a doornail.
Step 2) Get bike pointed in the most downhill direction, in nutral, Key on, & Ignition Switch on.
Step 3) Push bike as fast as you can.
Step 4) Jump on.
Step 5) Pull in Clutch lever and shift bike into 2nd gear.
Step 6) Release clutch lever
Bike should buck a bit and then start.
Step 7) get bike home and on the charger! lol.

1) Find battery deader than a doornail. Swear alot...:yell:
2) Get bike pointed downhill, forget to put it in neutral
3) Push bike but it doesn't go anywhere
4) Put the bike in neutral and swear some more... :yell:
5) Push bike as fast as I can
6) Try to jump on bike to which A or B happens...
A. I try to jump on the bike, it gets off kilter and tips over..scraping the plastic all to hell.
B. I try to jump on the bike, but now its rolling away faster than I am... so I watch it roll down the hill without me... crashing into a ditch or a tree.
7) Swear some more... :yell:
8) Call AAA :shhh:

Cold weather can drain a battery down and aswell as the guages... takes forever but the combination of the two will slowly drain a battery and sence bike batteries ar smaller in scale compared to a car or truck it takes less time to drain them. A winter with no recharge will suck a new battery dead with out a prob. In the gauges you have a clock and small memory that is constantly usuing small amounts of juice... just a matter of time.

Yep, what he said....
Your bikes computer keeps its memory settings by power from the battery. If you have a clock, it uses that battery power to stay correct, etc. Its all a trickle drain on the tinie battery in your bike.
