this is a repost from Brians post
I went down today on the Aufderheide ride, but ironically just before Westfir and NOT on Aufderheide itself. So how did this happen? The answers may shock and surprise you! Read on.
I was trying to get to the lead of the pack to get them to pull over because I suspected a counting error as to the number of bikes, and thus had my attention focused on them and not on the road (mistake #1). I entered a easy ess curve starting right and then going left a little harder - no challenge had I been paying attention. I noticed I was drifting a bit close to the edge and looked down to see how close I was (mistake #2). Damn, I was close. I looked ahead and started to lean in more, but it was too late, and in the time it took just to peek at my clearance I ran out it. One of the tires went off (not sure which) and down I went, low side style. Thanks to my leathers and other gear I was completely unhurt.
Lessons to be learned here:
Pay attention to every corner. Even the ones in town or that may not otherwise seem like a challenge.
NEVER take your eyes off where you WANT to be going.
Proper gear can reduce or eliminate injury.
I've been riding a long time, and #2, #3 as lessons I've already learned, despite the fact I looked down for split second anyway (I didn't think I was that close and was possibly a bit too confident that my skill would allow such an indulgence before taking corrective action). But #1 is new to me. It may seem like common sense, but we were NOT in a dangerous section of road and I wasn't going that fast. No need to worry, right? That's where I was wrong.
