So I took my 1976 honda CJ 360T on the freeway for the first time on my way to work tonight, and about 5 minutes after getting off the freeway one of my cylinders failed. If I roll hard on the throttle it starts to backfire pretty bad, or if I try to cruise ~5,000 RPM it does the same thing. So far I am going to: Adjust valves, check the plugs, check the contacts and see what else the manual might say to check.
If any of you guys out there have any more idea, I would love to hear them!

Check the wires too... might be loosing spark... also, if a carb is sticking, it might be getting too much fuel and fouling it out???? Just thinking out loud...

So I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to a Timing issue. Now I just have to remove the bolts that the previous owner stripped, and I should be good to go.

tap and die my friend. you can pick up a cheap set at Jerry's. I would recommend having the replacments in hand before you start though.....:2cents:

5,000 rpm on an old Honda twin is hardly lugging the engine.
I'm betting one set of points is toast.
