View Full Version : Speed trap!
Eugene police department in search of revenue. There is a large speed trap on
washington jefferson bridge this morning. At least 7 motorcycle officers and 2 camped out on freeway with radar/laser. I have seen about seven ppl pull over on my test drives this morning. Dj
I wondered what they were doing. I went over that bridge yesterday and there were two police officers with notepads standing along side the bridge taking notes and such.

Last time I saw a moto-copper there I was cruzing in the left lane and he couldn't even see me through all of the traffic in the right lane. Narrow field of vision through those lazer guns.
I do really kinda miss my radar detector though. :frown: It never really saved me from any tickets, because I would almost always see the cop before the cop would see me. There was one time with an unmarked truck in front of me on a mountain road, that had my detector not been screaming at me, I would have over-taken him for sure.
Thanks for the heads up DJ!

Radar detectors don't provide absolute protection from speeding - they are simply one more "sense" for your brain to process. They are not a replacement for your other senses, including common sense!

Sheeesh. Police work should be about protecting the public and public interests, NOT about revenue generation. That's about as big of a conflict of interest as I can imagine. Heck, while they're at it, why don't they just get rid of that whole pesky legal system with judges and all and let the police decide who's guilty on the spot... :(

Was told by our shuttle driver that the EPD is on the washington/jefferson street bridge again. Relaxing in their lawn chairs trying to catch speeders. Dj

Yeah, i saw about a half dozen cycle cops meeting up at the 7/11 at the base of the bridge, on my way to work this morning. Guess they had so much fun last time that they thought the would do it again.

I saw three officers at the 7-11 when I came off 105 yesterday at 2:00. They were standing in front of the store and watched me go by. Thankfully, I was behaving myself at the time.:angel:
I come and go off that ramp all the time since I live in that hood and it seems that it's patroled pretty heavily between there and I-5. At this point, I just assume they're going to be there.

I work at the corner of 7th and Lawrence and everytime I've gone out for a smoke this week they've had someone pulled over right in front of the offfice. They've been tagging people on the bridge both into and out of town and have others waiting to pull them over so the bridge cops don't have to leave. There's been at least 6 or 7 of them out there all week. I've yet to see them with a bike though!

I figure you pretty much hit the nail on the head, Keshtie, When you made the point about not getting any tax money. I think that cops should get more money for the taxpayers, however, I think that most ppl would feel much better about giving money to the police, if they would do some good in the area. I know that the cops try hard and do important stuff, but when there main interaction with the populous is pulling them over for minor traffic infractions, vs. say returning a stolen car, catching the meth-head who stole there car sterio, or kickin in the head of the tweaker who broke into their home... Well maybe that is asking to much, but by god I don't feel one bit safer when I see a police officer pulling over some young kid in a lowered civic for not having a front plate (yeah, that is really time well spent ). Or the ever popular EPD past time, we like to call bum-herding. :idunno:Does it really take four cops to ask a bum to leave a street corner. I will give you two police, bums are unpredictable. :shifty:

Are they just to the point they grab the easy jobs and don't have time or resources to do the dirty jobs? Burglary, theft, assault and all that other nasty work?
Hey, why don't we have a motorcop like MEP on the ESB?

I was formerly married to a Eugene officer. B*tch and moan all you want, its a thankless and heroic job. You're not seeing the stuff they deal with in other aspects of the job. They do and see things that most people couldn't handle. . . including listening to people whine non-stop about getting tickets. If you can't take the ticket, don't speed! Sure I don't like getting tickets, but I know its a probablility of riding fast. Yes, there are some A-holes with badges, but alot of the guys (and gals) on the force ride bikes and are pretty damn cool.
As far as that speed trap goes, I travel that section of road alot, and I've seen TONS of people going through there at really unsafe speeds, darting into another lane at the last second to cut in front of someone so they could get to an exit two seconds faster... and frankly, I'm F'n tired of being held up by all the accidents they cause. So to you EPD motors officers that gave those people tickets... :clapping:  Thank you for doing a job that I sure as H*LL would never want to do.
And if you don't like my opinion :twofinger ... you know what they say about opinions... they're like A*ssholes, everyones got one, and they all stink.

+1000 Tom & FJMam. I don't vote to give them any money because I don't like how they allocate their resources. If they want more $$ they need to show me they can manage what they already have well. Generating revenue by ticketing the public for petty infractions only pisses people off causing them not to vote for increased funds.

I forgot to add that police work is supposed to be a public service. To me that implies:
1. It's an expense (NOT a source of revenue)
2. It's supposed to serve the needs of the PEOPLE, not itself (like by generating revenue). It shouldn't matter if they agree with the desires of the public or not; they should DO what the publics WANTS.

Hating all cops because of a few bad ones, or what they do for a living, just seems like a huge waste of energy to me. Lots of people hate all sportbike riders because of their experiences with one or two bad riders. I don't always agree on the departments policies, but I know alot of police in alot of different cities that are great people. Why hate them just because of their job?
Traffic enforcment is a very small part of what they do, it just happens to be what involves the 'average Joe' the most. Its not like the officers get to keep the $$$, and they do NOT have a 'quota'. Do you guys really think that NO ONE should ever be given a traffic ticket?
...And even though there are a few officers that are members of this site, I'm not sure why they would ever want to join in... they get enough crap on the job.
But hey, everyone has their point of view. Its all good. I'm just personally not going to waste my time being mad at people I don't even know... :D

Sorry to get you so fired up Karen. I guess I should have been more clear. My comments had nothing to do with my getting tickets, or me being in the wrong in any way. Just looking like me was enough to get me into crap more than once. I totally realize that most LEO's are good people, no different than me. I just always seem to get the bad ones:smilewink

People like to say they hate meter maids, because no one likes to get parking tickets. On the flip side no one likes to have to drive around the block five times trying to find parking. The fact of the matter is that if people weren't afraid to get a parking ticket, they would never move their cars. For fear that they would never get a parking space again. It is because of parking tickets and meter maids that we all can enjoy reasonable order in the matter of finding a parking space. Yet none of this order is attributed to the actions of the meter maids. Thus people still go on "hating" meter maids. Perhaps this analogy sums up some people's impressions of LEOs. If your only experiences with lawenforcement is on the receiving end, and you don’t take a step back to look at the big picture, it is easy to see how you could “hate” LEOs, just as you might “hate” meter maids.
I would say that I am very lucky to have never received undo attention from a LEO. Every ticket that I have received was solidly earned! I have only once run across a LEO who I felt truly had an authority complex. And I fought that ticket, and won!:cool: Still I have friends who have not been as lucky as I have, and their experiences would lead them to have very harsh feelings towards LEOs.
It would be nice to believe that every situation and every individual personal encounter that we as human beings experience should be taken as its own isolated event. And that no generalizations should be concluded from it, about the persons involved. This just is not the case. I believe that we are wired to draw conclusions based on past experiences, even if our assumptions are incorrect. You meet a scary looking dude in an alley and he mugs you. You will not be likely to want to meet any other scary looking dudes in alleys. Not because all scary looking dudes in alleys are bad, but because the one whom you shared an experience with was bad. If on the other had the scary looking dude came over and helped to find your lost cat in the dark alley, you might have a very different outlook on things....
But I digress, I did not get the impression that the users commenting on this thread were speaking ill of LEOs. Rather it was my impression that the "anger and frustration" was directed at the decision makers who instructed the officers to put their time and effort into enforcing the traffic codes, rather than performing what could be considered “more important duties.”
I would like to say that I do respect the LEOs that put their lives on the line to protect and serve. Furthermore, I can only imagine that as frustrated as we all are, about the criminals being released at every turn, the LEOs out there must be even more pissed at all seemingly wasted efforts put into apprehend the criminals in the first place, only to have them released or worse yet, not prosecuted at all.
I think we can all agree that this is not a street level issue by any means. The politicians who decide what programs get funded, and what corporations get tax cuts, are the ones who should be held accountable for their decisions. :2cents: (times like 1000)

and if you get busted for doing a buck+ don't come whine'n to me. you got to figger in the ticket as part of price you pay along with tires, gas, tags, changes & sprockets, insurance, riding gear.

Actually, I did vote to give them more funds.
I do highly respect and appreciate the law enforcement we have and I don't flick 'em s**t.
As a matter of fact, you heard it first.......I got pulled over Sunday night in a friends cage because I misjudged a situation and guess who was sitting right there on the shoulder to recieve the fruits of that mistake? 2 cops.
They were very civil, I apologized profusely and laughed at myself and it was all cool from there.
I wouldn't be willing to do the work they do. Especially when they do put some ass wipe away and then they see that same piece of waste walk the next day. That's just thankless.
So I meant no offense. I'm just bothered that there doesn't seem to be a stronger focus on more important issues.
I live where tweakers and homeless help themselves to stuff and fools have pit bulls killing pets and idiots run their imports up and down the street without regard to children, older folks or pets. There's my frustration.

Bobby, you did't offend me at all. You were just expressing your opinion and I was just expressing my opinion. Mine is one that happens to be contrary to the 'popular' opinion... and something I am fairly passionate about since I've experienced both sides. (While married to a Leo, my mom's husband was one of the ones that spearheaded the Eugene police review board... as he drives home drunk every night). We're all adults and people having differing opinions doesn't offend me at all when its not directed at me... I think that peoples differences make the world a less boring place anyways.
Tom, +1000 ...You summed it up very well... as usual. :clapping:
Keshtie, I can totally understand your frustration with that stuff. I have alot of those same frustrations. (We must live in the same neighborhood..lol). I wish there was an easy answer. Its obvious that the police will never have enough man-power to deal with all situations... but with street justice being illegal it puts us between a rock and a hard place :bash:. It is VERY frustrating, and it seems the honest, hard working person gets the shaft more often than not these days.
Steve, good point about riding 100MPH, I agree. NO ONE wants to get caught, but it is a risk we all know about. If people took responsibility for the things they do the world would be a better place. I have alot of respect for people that own up to what they do when caught... not blame it on other people or things. Of course, everything is forgiven these days as long as you check into re-hab after you get caught for whatever you do... I wonder if they have re-hab for speed addiction?!

...Gonna catch me riding dirty!!... :ride:Yep, two days after Ticker bought the CBR, I bought the dirtbike. I talked with the DMV today, and apparently it's EASY to register a dual-sport as long as you have the right equipment...turn signals, light, etc. So in the not too distant future (as soon as I can get a Baja Designs kit installed on it) it will probably show up to a bike night :bounce: . Only sucky part is then I'll have to insure it for the street. I've gone out and played on it in the dirt/gravel roads once so far. Its soooo much taller than my last dirtbike, heck, its WAY taller than the 675 even! In fact the sportbikes look kinda dinky next to the dirtbikes...
